"It seems I am working for the Jesuits these days": The Thomas Merton Collection at Boston College, John J. Burns Library, June 7-August 30, 2013.
Thomas Merton, the famed Trappist monk, had begun corresponding with Father Francis Sweeney, S.J. before his best-selling autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain, captivated the nation. Merton gave the typescript of the autobiography to Sweeney, beginning a fruitful collaboration between himself and Boston College. Librarians, Father Terence Connolly, S.J. and Father Brendan Connolly, S.J. quickly accumulated a Thomas Merton Collection for Boston College by agreeing to loan Merton research materials in exchange for signed copies of Merton's publications. This was the beginning of the Merton Collection, which continues to grow and now includes drawings by Merton, photographic images, and correspondence. The exhibit, currently showing in the John J. Burns Library, explores both the 1949 exhibit that celebrated the acquisition of The Seven Storey Mountain typescript and Merton's correspondence with these three Boston College Jesuits.

The MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, in partnership with the Governor's Readiness Centers, has developed a new series on curriculum mapping as a core tool for communicating about and aligning curriculum and instruction across grades, subject areas, and schools. The series includes webinars, summer institutes, and a variety of follow-up activities. More information is available on the Curriculum Alignment & Mapping Project (CAMP) website.
Registration for the Summer CAMP Institutes is now open. These two-day sessions will provide substantial time for district teams to evaluate the status of mapping in their districts, work collaboratively on district maps and implementation plans, and learn from colleagues about how other districts are using mapping to improve teaching and learning. Districts are encouraged to register teams of 3-6 people, including district curriculum leadership. Please select a number of registrations that reflects the size of your team. You will be prompted to enter information about each member of your team during the next step. Your team may only attend one summer institute.

If you have reached the limits of the 'hacksaw, drillpress, and file' school of metalworking, this class is for you. The milling machine and lathe are the basic tools of the machinist - familiarity with these, and the various operations they can perform, as well as the fixtures and measurement tools used when making parts with them, will make any hobbyist, artist, or all-around maker a more capable individual.
This is an expansion and revamping of the Precision Machining class previously offered at Artisan's Asylum. In this class, students will not only learn mill and lathe operations, as before, but will also spend a significant amount of time in lecture learning part layout skills, precision measuring skills, scribe and centerpunch work, material selection, fastener selection, surface finish differentiation, and more. Students will then proceed to learn how to set up and use the milling machine, lathe, and supplementary tools such as grinders, tap and die sets, and more.
No prior metalworking experience is required - we have taught software and electrical engineers, mathematicians, artists, and, yes, even you mechanical engineers who skipped your shop classes.
Class Goals:
The goal of this class will be to introduce students to safe and accurate manual machining practices, getting them to the point where they can safely use the Asylum milling machines and engine lathes. The class will also make students familiar with the processes that these machines either automate or make more precise, to make them more effective machinists.
Prerequisites:
None.
Materials:
Students will purchase inexpensive raw materials from the instructor as needed for their projects.
Instructor Biography:
Christian believes that Keats -almost- got it right: "A thing of beauty and precision, made by skill and will, is a joy forever."
Years of pushing around photons on a computer monitor have led him to appreciate the simple but intense pleasure of making a fine, precise, real artifact by application of skill. Currently active in the robotics R&D field, Christian uses his abilities as a machinist, mechanic, woodworker, welder, plumber, and otherwise general accumulator-of-knowledge-and-knowhow as a compliment to his nominal career as an electrical engineer.

This training course is an introduction into knowledge discovery from unstructured data like text documents. It focuses on the necessary preprocessing steps and the most successful methods for automatic text classification (including Naive Bayes and Support Vector Machines, SVM) and text clustering. Many practical exercises for different settings (for example e-mail spam detection, automatic e-mail routing, adaptive personal news filtering, sentiment analysis of text documents like news, web pages, blogs, e-mail, or PDF documents) will enable the participants to transfer the gained knowledge to own text mining problems.
After the training course the participants will have the ability to:
identify the processes for processing unstructured data
transform textual data into a structured format
apply different statistical text processing methods
perform text classification or text clustering
work on recent tasks like sentiment analysis or opinion mining
Previous knowledge: foundations of data mining and RapidMiner
Methods: lectures, discussions, individual and group work, exercises on realistic data.
Participants may introduce their own work and project specific questions in order to find particular solutions together with the trainer and other participants. The training course addresses intermediate learners and we recommend visiting the course Introduction to Data Mining and Predictive Analytics with RapidMiner.
